Sodium Carbonate
In 1791, French chemist Nicolas Leblanc prepared sodium carbonate, laying the foundation for the synthesis of sodium bicarbonate. In 1801, German pharmacologist Valentin Rose the Younger reported the discovery of sodium bicarbonate. In 1846, American bakers John Dwight and Austin Church established the first factory in the United States to produce sodium bicarbonate from sodium carbonate and carbon dioxide. In 1861, Belgian chemist E. Solvay developed an industrial method for producing sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate. In 1942, Chinese chemical expert Hou Debang invented the combined alkali process based on the Solvay process. In addition to extraction from naturally mined minerals, most of the world's industrially produced sodium bicarbonate is influenced by the Solvay process.
Product application scope
Sodium bicarbonate can be used to produce acid-base fire extinguishers and foam fire extinguishers. In the rubber industry, sodium bicarbonate can be used in rubber and sponge production. In the metallurgical industry, sodium bicarbonate can be used as a flux for casting steel ingots. In the machinery industry, sodium bicarbonate can be used as a molding aid for cast steel (sand casting) sand molds. In the printing and dyeing industry, sodium bicarbonate can be used as a color fixative for dyeing and printing, an acid-base buffer, and a post-treatment agent for fabric dyeing and finishing; adding baking soda to dyeing can prevent color spots on the yarn tube, and it can also be used as a detergent for wool.
In food processing, sodium bicarbonate is the most widely used loosening agent, used in the production of biscuits, bread, etc., but sodium carbonate will remain after the action. Excessive use will cause the food to have too much alkalinity, resulting in a deterioration of flavor and a yellow-brown color. It is a generator of carbon dioxide in carbonated beverages; it can be compounded with alum to form alkaline baking powder, and it can also be compounded with soda ash to form civilian soda ash; it can also be used as a butter preservative. It can be used as a color preservative for fruits and vegetables in vegetable processing. Adding about 0.1% to 0.2% of sodium bicarbonate when washing fruits and vegetables can stabilize the green color. When sodium bicarbonate is used as a fruit and vegetable treatment agent, it can increase the pH value of fruits and vegetables by boiling and bleaching fruits and vegetables, improve the water holding capacity of proteins, promote the softening of food tissue cells, and dissolve astringent components.
Sodium bicarbonate can be used as a pharmaceutical raw material to treat hyperacidity and metabolic acidosis, and it can also alkalize urine to prevent uric acid kidney stones. It can also reduce the renal toxicity of sulfonamides, prevent hemoglobin from depositing in the renal tubules during acute hemolysis, and treat symptoms caused by hyperacidity; intravenous drip has a non-specific therapeutic effect on drug poisoning such as barbiturates, salicylates, and methanol. However, it is contraindicated for gastric lavage in the event of ingestion of strong acid poisoning, and arrhythmia, muscle cramps, pain, abnormal fatigue and weakness, slowed breathing, bad breath, frequent urination, urgency, persistent headache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, etc. may occur when injected in large quantities, in the presence of renal insufficiency, or used for a long time.
Environmental hazards
During the production of sodium bicarbonate, process differences will produce a large amount of waste gas (including a large amount of carbon dioxide, a large amount of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ammonia and many other harmful substances), wastewater and solid waste, and a large number of plastic bags and cartons are used in the production, transportation and packaging process, which are difficult to be effectively recycled and treated. In addition to occupying a large amount of land resources, these wastes will also cause serious pollution to the surrounding environment.
