Sodium Thiosulfate Anhydrous

Sodium thiosulfate is one of the essential drugs announced by the World Health Organization. It is used for specific detoxification and is administered by injection (250 mg/mL, 50 mL ampoule).
Sodium thiosulfate can be used to treat poisoning by cyanide, arsenic, bismuth, iodine, mercury, lead, etc. With the participation of thiocyanate, the sulfur provided by sodium thiosulfate can combine with free (or methemoglobin-bound) cyanide ions in the body to form non-toxic thiocyanate, which is excreted in the urine. At the same time, it can combine with a variety of metal ions to form non-toxic sulfides, which are excreted in the urine.
Studies have shown that sodium thiosulfate is the most promising strategy for preventing ototoxicity induced by cisplatin (a cancer chemotherapy drug) in adult cancer patients. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of sodium thiosulfate for the prevention of hearing loss caused by cisplatin chemotherapy in pediatric patients with local non-metastatic solid tumors.
In addition, sodium thiosulfate has antifungal effects and can treat skin pruritus, chronic dermatitis, chronic urticaria, drug eruption, scabies, ringworm, etc. Skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis may respond to sodium thiosulfate solutions at concentrations as low as 0.5%. Sodium thiosulfate solutions at concentrations of 2-8% can be used to treat acne.
