Sodium sulfite is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula Na2SO3. It is a sodium sulfite and is mainly used as a stabilizer for artificial fibers, a bleaching agent for fabrics, a photographic developer, a dyeing and deoxidizing agent, a reducing agent for spices and dyes, and a lignin remover for papermaking.
On October 27, 2017, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer published a preliminary list of carcinogens for reference, and sulfites were included in the list of Class 3 carcinogens.
Product application scope
Sodium sulfite can be used as a developer, a preservative for dried fruits and meats, a deoxidizer in the printing and dyeing industry, and as a reducing chemical reagent in the production and synthesis of chemical and laboratory applications.
It is a white granular powder at room temperature, soluble in water, and has reducing properties. When heated, it disproportionates into sodium sulfide and sodium sulfate. When placed in the air, it gradually oxidizes into sodium sulfate. It can exist in three forms: anhydrous, heptahydrate, and decahydrate. Among them, the anhydrous form is the least susceptible to oxidation [2]. Its aqueous solution is alkaline due to hydrolysis, and it releases toxic sulfur dioxide gas when acidified. Sodium sulfite can be prepared by passing sulfur dioxide into a sodium hydroxide solution. When sulfur dioxide is excessive, sodium bisulfite is generated.
Skin contact: Take off contaminated clothing and rinse with plenty of running water.
Eye contact: Lift the eyelids and rinse with running water or saline. Seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Leave the scene and go to a place with fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek medical attention.
Ingestion: Drink plenty of warm water and induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.
Hazardous characteristics: No special combustion and explosion characteristics. High heat decomposition produces toxic sulfide smoke.
Harmful combustion products: Sulfide.
Fire extinguishing method: Firefighters must wear full-body fireproof and anti-gas suits and extinguish fires in the upwind direction. When extinguishing a fire, move the container away from the fire scene to an open area as much as possible.
Operation precautions: Closed operation, strengthen ventilation. Operators must be specially trained and strictly abide by the operating procedures. It is recommended that operators wear self-priming filter dust masks, chemical safety glasses, anti-poison penetration work clothes, and rubber gloves. Avoid generating dust. Avoid contact with acids. Load and unload gently during transportation to prevent packaging damage. Equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment. Empty containers may have harmful residues.
