Chlorinated paraffin is often used in combination with antimony based flame retardants and is widely used in soft polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polystyrene, and other materials. Chlorinated paraffin is a odorless, non-toxic, flame retardant, and low volatile viscous liquid with low volatility and good electrical insulation. It is insoluble in water, ethanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol, and soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and their chlorides. It can be used as a plasticizer for PVC, an additive for rubber, coatings, and inks, an additive for machining lubricants, and a flame retardant for plastics and rubber.

 

Chlorinated paraffin is a mixture of chlorinated derivatives formed by free radical reactions of straight chain alkanes with different carbon numbers from C10 to C30. Generally, the product has a chlorine content of 40% to 70%, and a light yellow viscous liquid with a chlorine content of 40% to 52% at room temperature; 54% to 60% are viscous yellow semi-solid substances; 70% are brittle resin like solids. The one with high chlorine content is preferred, with low price and acceptable miscibility. In order to improve the stability of chlorinated paraffin, an efficient composite stabilizer was successfully developed using ethylene glycol glycidyl ether (DGEG) and methyltin as the main stabilizers, triphenyl phosphite (TPP) and epoxy soybean oil (ESO) as co stabilizers, and UV absorbent UV-531 and antioxidants.
