Silane coupling agent is a chemical agent developed by Union Carbide Corporation of the United States, mainly used in glass fiber reinforced plastics. The molecular structure of silane coupling agent is generally Y-R-Si(OR)3 (where Y is an organic functional group and SiOR is a silane alkoxy group). Silane alkoxy groups are reactive to inorganic substances, while organic functional groups are reactive or compatible to organic substances.

① In the bonding of metal and non-metal in structural adhesives, if silane thickeners are used, they can condense with metal oxides or condense with another silanol, so that the silicon atoms are in close contact with the surface of the adhesive. For example, adding silane as a thickener to nitrile phenolic structural adhesive can significantly improve the bonding strength.
② In the bonding of glass fiber, silane has been widely used as a treatment agent at home and abroad. It can react chemically with the interface, thereby improving the bonding strength. For example, if silane is not used as a treatment agent for chloroprene rubber bonding, the bonding peel strength is 1.07 kg/cm2, and if aminosilane is used as a treatment agent, the bonding peel strength is 8.7 kg/cm2.
③ In the bonding of rubber and other materials, silane thickeners have special functions. It significantly improves the bonding strength of various rubbers and other materials. For example, when glass is bonded to polyurethane rubber, if silane is not used as a treating agent, the peel strength of the glue is 0.224 kg/cm2. If silane is added, the peel strength is 7.26 kg/cm2.

 

Other applications of silane coupling agents include:
① attaching immobilized enzymes to the surface of glass substrates,
② preventing sand in oil well drilling,
③ making masonry surfaces hydrophobic,
④ making fluorescent lamp coatings have higher surface resistance through anti-hygroscopic effects;
⑤ improving the hygroscopic properties of organic phases on glass surfaces in liquid chromatography columns.

Surface treatment
It can improve the bonding performance between glass fiber and resin, greatly improve the strength, electrical, water resistance, and weather resistance of glass fiber reinforced composite materials. Even in wet state, it has a significant effect on improving the mechanical properties of composite materials. The use of silane coupling agents in glass fiber is quite common, and the silane coupling agents used in this aspect account for about 50% of its total consumption. Among them, the most commonly used varieties are vinyl silane, amino silane, methacryloxy silane, etc.


Filled plastics
The filler can be surface treated in advance or directly added to the resin. It can improve the dispersibility and adhesion of the filler in the resin, improve the compatibility between inorganic fillers and resins, improve process performance, and improve the mechanical, electrical, and weather resistance of filled plastics (including rubber).


Used as a tackifier for sealants, adhesives, and coatings
It can improve their bonding strength, water resistance, and weather resistance. Silane coupling agents can often solve the problem that some materials have long been unable to bond. The principle of silane coupling agent as a tackifier is that it has two groups; one group can combine with the bonded skeleton material; and the other group can combine with the polymer material or adhesive, thereby forming a strong chemical bond at the bonding interface, greatly improving the bonding strength. There are generally three ways to apply silane coupling agent: one is as a surface treatment agent for skeleton materials; the second is to add it to the adhesive; the third is to add it directly to the polymer material. From the perspective of giving full play to its effectiveness and reducing costs, the first two methods are better.
