Sodium sulfide originated in China in the 1930s, when a chemical plant in Dalian, Liaoning Province began small-scale production. From the 1980s to the mid-1990s, with the vigorous development of the international chemical industry, China's sodium sulfide industry underwent a fundamental change, with a sharp increase in manufacturers and scale, and rapid development. The sodium sulfide production area centered on Yuncheng, Shanxi Province quickly expanded to more than 10 provinces, cities and regions including Yunnan, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Shaanxi. The national annual production capacity soared from 420,000 tons in the late 1980s to 640,000 tons in the mid-1990s. The fastest growing production is in Inner Mongolia, Gansu and Xinjiang in northwest China. Inner Mongolia's production capacity has reached 200,000 tons, making it China's largest sodium sulfide product production base.
Product application scope

In the dye industry, it is used to produce sulfur dyes, and is the raw material for sulfur cyan and sulfur blue. In the printing and dyeing industry, it is used as a dyeing aid to dissolve sulfur dyes. In the leather industry, it is used for hydrolysis to dehair raw hides, and is also used to prepare sodium polysulfide to accelerate the soaking and softening of dry hides. In the papermaking industry, it is used as a cooking agent for paper. In the textile industry, it is used for denitrification of artificial fibers and reduction of nitrates, and as a mordant for dyeing cotton fabrics.
Sodium sulfide can also be used to treat the conductive layer in direct electroplating. Sodium sulfide reacts with palladium to generate colloidal palladium sulfide to achieve the purpose of forming a good conductive layer on the non-metallic surface.

Isolate the leaked contaminated area and set up warning signs around it. Emergency response personnel should wear gas masks and chemical protective clothing. Do not directly contact the leaked material. Avoid dust, collect it with a clean shovel in a dry, clean and covered container, and transport it to a waste disposal site. You can also rinse it with a large amount of water and put the diluted washing liquid into the wastewater system. In case of large-scale leakage, collect and recycle it or dispose of it harmlessly.
The wastewater that causes sulfide pollution is mainly alkaline wastewater, which can be neutralized. During the neutralization stage, the pH decreases and some hydrogen sulfide will escape into the atmosphere. At the same time, the heat generated by the neutralization reaction will also increase the release rate of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is released in large quantities in the air, which will pollute the air and disturb the public. The chlorination method can also be used to eliminate sulfide pollution, which is also one of the effective methods, but it requires a large amount of chlorine and is expensive. In addition, iron or non-toxic iron salts (such as iron sulfate, iron chloride, etc.) are added to the sulfide-contaminated wastewater. After 2 hours of aeration, active iron hydroxide is produced, and the sulfide can be removed in the form of iron sulfide precipitation. The wastewater with severe sulfide pollution can also be neutralized by flue gas first, and then treated by the activated sludge method.
