Sodium sulfite is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula Na2SO3. It is a sodium sulfite and is mainly used as a stabilizer for artificial fibers, a fabric bleaching agent, a photographic developer, a dyeing and deoxidizing agent, a fragrance and dye reducing agent, and a papermaking lignin remover.

Sodium sulfite is an inorganic compound. It is a white granular powder at room temperature, soluble in water, and has reducing properties. When heated, it disproportionates into sodium sulfide and sodium sulfate, and gradually oxidizes into sodium sulfate when placed in the air. It can exist in three forms: anhydrous, heptahydrate, and decahydrate, among which the anhydrous form is the least susceptible to oxidation. Its aqueous solution is alkaline due to hydrolysis, and releases toxic sulfur dioxide gas when acidified.
